Srinagar, Nov 5: The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Tuesday paid rich tribute to his long-time friend and former National Conference (NC) leader, Devender Singh Rana, who recently passed away. Rana, who had transitioned to the BJP and won his last election on their ticket.
During the solemn session, Abdullah took a moment to remember Rana’s unwavering loyalty, both to the NC and to his journey in politics. “There are 57 obituaries today, but I feel compelled to speak about one person Devender Singh Rana. For nearly two decades of my political life, he stood by my side,” Abdullah began, his voice heavy with emotion.
He stated with a poignant regret, wishing he had reached out to mend their relationship in Rana’s final days. “Today, I realize how deeply his passing has impacted me not just politically, but personally. His absence will be a lasting sorrow,” he said, his heartfelt words filling the assembly.
Abdullah recounted how Rana had been his trusted media advisor and political confidant. When Abdullah assumed office as Chief Minister in 2009, Rana returned to support him as a senior advisor. “Through every change, his dedication to the party and his work ethic never wavered,” he added, acknowledging the silent sacrifices his friend made without complaint.
Reflecting on Rana’s humble beginnings, Abdullah shared a personal memory of his friend as a young man who started with a small car service station. “He was hardworking and grounded. Starting from a mechanic’s uniform, he grew into a successful businessman, but never forgot his roots,” he said, painting a picture of a man whose humility shaped his success.
