Jammu, Jan 28: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has asserted that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is a matter that will be resolved exclusively through Parliamentary decisions and not by individual states or Union Territories.
Addressing reporters in Jammu, Abdullah emphasised the importance of a national consensus on such a significant issue.
“The process of implementing the Uniform Civil Code is ongoing. However, no law related to the Civil Code has been finalized yet. The Parliament’s decision will ultimately determine the outcome, as no individual or group can unilaterally decide on such important matters,” the Chief Minister said.
In response to questions about the Waqf Board, Abdullah clarified that no laws concerning the board are currently being implemented by the government. He pointed to the role of the parliamentary committee in discussing and evaluating the matter.
“There is no law implemented on the Waqf Board yet. The parliamentary committee is debating the issue. Recently, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also participated in these discussions. The matter will be further deliberated upon in Parliament,” he explained, adding “the committee would finalise its work and submit a report to Parliament for further consideration, ensuring a structured and democratic approach to resolving these issues”.
