Budgam, May 21: Members of the Shia community carried out a condolence rally in various areas of Magam tehsil in central Kashmir’s Budgam district to mourn the tragic demise of Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, and other senior officials in a helicopter crash on May 19.
The rally saw the participation of women, young people, and senior citizens, who chanted slogans in support of the leaders. The procession began at Magam Gulmarg Road and concluded peacefully at Imambara Magam.
While the shops in the main markets of Magam remained closed, members of the Shia community also distributed free juice and water to travellers passing through the town.
“We organised this procession to express our condolences,” said a participant in the rally. “We stand in solidarity with the people of Iran during this time of grief.”
Another participant said, “There is a sense of sadness across all Muslim countries because President Ibrahim Raisi was a strong advocate against falsehood and stood with the oppressed, regardless of their nationality or religion. Iran’s President not only served as a leader within the Muslim community but also amplified the voices of oppressed individuals worldwide.”
Similarly, condolence processions were carried out at Budgam main town.
