Ganderbal, July 27: In a significant relief to the local population, the picturesque tourist destination of Naranag in Kangan, located in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, has officially reopened for visitors after remaining closed for several months due to heightened security concerns following the April 22 terror attack in Baisaran meadows of Pahalgam. The reopening of Naranag comes after consistent efforts and intervention by MLA Kangan, Mian Mehar Ali, who raised the matter at the highest levels, including with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and IGP Kashmir. Local stakeholders had submitted several appeals to the legislator, citing economic distress and livelihood challenges.“I received confirmation yesterday from top sources regarding the reopening of Naranag,” said MLA Mian Mehar Ali, speaking to Rising Kashmir. “I immediately conveyed the news to local residents who had been waiting anxiously for this day.” He further noted that the decision followed his meetings with LG Sinha and senior police officials, during which he pressed for the revival of closed tourist destinations and emphasized the importance of Naranag for the region’s economy and youth employment. The announcement was met with overwhelming gratitude from the local community.“We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mian Mehar Ali for his swift and compassionate response,” said a tourism stakeholder who had formally petitioned the MLA. “This decision has brought a wave of hope to our struggling families.” Locals hailed the legislator’s efforts as a turning point for the region.“His proactive leadership and genuine concern for the public good are commendable,” said a Naranag-based tourism operator. “The entire community stands behind him with gratitude and prayers.” Residents also acknowledged the supportive role played by the SSP Ganderbal and the district civil administration, who worked in tandem to assess the security situation and facilitate a safe reopening. With this positive step, local tourism stakeholders are now urging authorities to reopen the iconic Seven Great Lakes Trek, which remains restricted under ongoing security protocols. They believe restoring access to such destinations will not only boost the economy but also reaffirm confidence in Kashmir’s tourism potential. The reopening of Naranag is being widely seen as a boost to the region’s tourism industry and a symbol of gradual return to normalcy in Kashmir’s travel sector.
