Pulwama, Dec 03: To address environmental concerns and alleviate the inconvenience caused to residents, the district administration of Pulwama in South Kashmir is contemplating to plug the garbage dumping site at Dangepora locality.
The current dumping site along the circular road has been a source of nuisance, prompting Deputy Commissioner Dr Basharat Qayoom to take proactive measures.
Dr Qayoom expressed his concern and emphasized the importance of mitigating its impact on the immediate neighbourhood.
The Deputy Commissioner said that he ensured covering of the site with soil to minimize its adverse effects.
Dr Qayoom told Rising Kashmir that a new project has been initiated at Newa area, approximately 5 kilometres from the district headquarters after identification of land for the same purpose.
Dr Qayoom highlighted the significance of the new solid waste management facility being developed in Newa, emphasizing its adherence to scientific disposal methods.
He conveyed his satisfaction with the project’s progress and disclosed that efforts are underway to expedite construction before the onset of snowfall.
The Deputy Commissioner said that they are expecting the project to be completed by April of the next year.
The decision to disuse the dumping site at Dangepora has been met with relief and approval from residents and shopkeepers along the circular road on the Pulwama-Shopian highway.
Over the past couple of years, these stakeholders had been advocating for redressing their grievance, citing the adverse impact on their daily lives and businesses.
Bashir Ahmad, a local resident, expressed his approval of the proposed discontinuation of garbage dumping site at Dangerpora.
Ahmad welcomed the proactive step, appreciating the local administration, particularly lauding the efforts of Deputy Commissioner Dr. Basharat Qayoom for addressing their longstanding demand.
Highlighting the widespread impact of the current dumping site, Ahmad pointed out that it wasn’t just a source of concern for residents and shopkeepers but also caused inconvenience to commuters and students from a nearby college.
The decision to plug the site is seen as a significant relief for the entire community, acknowledging the administration’s responsiveness to the needs of both residents and the broader public.
Chief Executive Officer, Municipal Committee Pulwama, Wali Mohammed Wani, confirmed that the current dumping site at Dangerpora will be sealed once the solid waste treatment plant becomes ready at Newa.
