Srinagar, Mar 10: Many areas in the higher reaches of Kashmir experienced fresh snowfall on Monday, while as the plains witnessed light rain. The Meteorological Department (MeT) has predicted that cloudy weather conditions till March 16.
Director of the Meteorological Department Kashmir, Mukhtar Ahmad, told Rising Kashmir that moderate snowfall was reported in several high-altitude areas, including the renowned ski resort of Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Amarnath Cave, Shopian and other hilly regions.
“On the evening of March 10, we expect intermittent light to moderate rain and snow across many areas, with moderate snowfall likely over the higher reaches of Kupwara, Bandipora, and Ganderbal,” he said.
Ahmad added that light rain and snow are expected at isolated to scattered locations on March 11. The weather will continue to fluctuate, with intermittent spells of light to moderate rain and snow predicted between March 12 and 14 across the region. This pattern is expected to persist through March 15 and 16.
However, from March 17 to 21, the weather is expected to remain generally dry, with no significant precipitation during that period, according to Ahmad.
Regarding road conditions, the Traffic Department issued an advisory following fresh snowfall along the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri Road and Mughal Road. As a result, no traffic will be allowed on these highways on Saturday.
“Traffic is currently moving normally on the NH-44 Srinagar-Jammu highway, while Mughal Road remains blocked. Traffic has not been released on the SSG Road due to slippery conditions,” a spokesman said.
Subject to favourable weather and improved road conditions, Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) (Passenger vehicles) will be allowed to move from both sides on the Jammu-Srinagar NHW. Traffic from Jammu will be allowed towards Srinagar and vice versa, with TCU Jammu/Srinagar liaising with TCU Ramban before releasing the traffic.
