Ganderbal, Feb 05: In the aftermath of the recent heavy snowfall in the Kashmir valley, particularly in higher reaches, the Border Road Organization (BRO) has commenced the arduous task of snow removal on the treacherous Zojila pass. As the meteorological department predicted intense snowfall in the higher reaches of Ganderbal district, the areas of Sonamarg and Zojila pass have been adversely affected.
The officials revealed that the Sonamarg road has been successfully cleared off the snow, allowing traffic to resume. Today, with the improvement of the weather conditions, the BRO initiated snow removal operations on the challenging stretch of Zojila Pass.
An official from the BRO said that the Hung area is now open for one-way traffic, equipped with anti-skid chains and a restricted speed of 20 kmph. Laborers are deployed along the route, urging vehicle drivers to cooperate and adhere to their directions. Despite progress, the persistent risk of avalanches looms, necessitating ongoing monitoring.
Official sources reported that around six feet of snow has accumulated on Zojila Pass, with potential avalanche threats in specific locations. Despite the challenges, the BRO remains committed to snow clearance operations, with further decisions pending completion of the Zojila Pass snow clearance.
