Srinagar, May 16: Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences has successfully performed its first infant Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (Bone Marrow Transplant) on an eight-month-old child suffering from Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare and life-threatening immune disorder.
Director SKIMS M. Ashraf Ganie congratulated the Department of Clinical Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) for achieving the milestone, describing it as a significant advancement in cellular therapy and transplant services in Jammu and Kashmir.
The infant, diagnosed with severe HLH, underwent the transplant after detailed evaluation and multidisciplinary planning. Officials said the child is now stable and has been discharged from the hospital.
Professor and Head of the Department of Clinical Hematology and BMT, Sajad Ahmad Geelani, said the achievement reflects the institute’s growing expertise in handling complex disorders requiring advanced transplant care.
Associate Professor Reashma Roshan said performing a transplant in such a young infant required specialised infrastructure, intensive monitoring and coordinated teamwork among various departments.
Assistant Professor Afaq Ahmad Khan said the successful procedure offers new hope for children suffering from rare immunological and hematological disorders in the region.
Director SKIMS also interacted with the child’s family at the time of discharge and appreciated the efforts of doctors, nursing staff and allied departments involved in the procedure.
