Srinagar, May 02: “The current elections are important as it is the first big election in J&K after 05 August 2019 when Article 370 was abrogated. We are seeking votes against those decisions. NC’s stand has always been clear on the issue of abrogation of Article 370,” said Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah on Thursday after filing his nomination papers for the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency.
Accompanied by the party’s Treasurer Shammi Oberoi and senior vice president of J&K Pradesh Congress Committee G N Monga, Abdullah filed the nomination papers before Baramulla Deputy Commissioner Minga Sherpa, who is the returning officer of the constituency.
Later, addressing a gathering at the Prof Showkat Ali Stadium in Baramulla, Omar said, “We left Srinagar in a couple of vehicles but reached here in a huge rally. And seeing such huge enthusiasm, I won’t be surprised if they postpone the elections in Baramulla like Anantnag. But whenever the elections are held we will be victorious. Voters have to decide on 20 May whether they want to send their candidate to Delhi or get Delhi’s proxy to Baramulla. My fight is not against an individual or a party but against the government in Delhi and RSS of Nagpur.”
“This is a reality,” the NC leader said. “In the previous elections, I fought against boycotts, I fought against guns and I fought against the circumstances of that time. But this time, Delhi has brought together all political parties here to defeat the NC.”
The former chief minister said the postponement of polls on the Anantnag-Rajouri seat “was done to benefit the Delhi and BJP”. “Nevertheless, I am sure that the people of Kashmir will come out and end their politics of deceit and manipulation once and forever,” he added.
Later in the day, Omar paid obeisance at the revered shrine of Molvi Mohi-Ud-Din Naqshbandi (RA) at Nihalpura, Pattan. He was accompanied by party functionaries and family members.
