Jammu, Aug 01: In a major relief to the future doctors, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has decided to allow the MBBS students to continue their course in Government Medical College and Hospital-Jammu, who were admitted for the course beyond the intake capacity of the GMC.
A total of 184 students were admitted for the MBBS course in the GMC-Jammu by the authorities for the Academic year 2022-23 as against the intake/prescribed capacity of 180 MBBs seats.
“The students, already admitted and pursuing their MBBS course in GMC-Jammu, should not be punished for no fault of their own,” Principal, GMC-Jammu, Ashutosh Gupta said, adding, “We have requested in writing to the NMC that students already admitted beyond the intake capacity must be allowed to continue their MBBS course as their future may not suffer.”
Four students were admitted to the GMC-Jammu beyond the intake capacity as sanctioned by the NMC. “It has been confirmed by the NMC that the 4 students pursuing MBBS course in GMC-Jammu will continue their studies,” the GMC Principal told Rising Kashmir. “We are only waiting for official/written confirmation from the NMC.”
The official confirmation will be conveyed very shortly, the Principal further said. He, however, added that for the Academic Year, 2023-24, 8 MBBS seats would be reduced for the GMC-Jammu as a penalty for negligence.
The NMC had imposed a penalty on Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu by slashing 8 MBBS seats for the academic year 2023-24 due to a violation committed by the concerned officials at GMC Jammu.
In gross violation of norms, the GMC-Jammu admitted 184 MBBS students, exceeding the approved intake capacity of 180 seats for the current academic year.
A high-level Coordination Committee meeting, chaired by the NMC Chairman on July 13, discussed the issue in detail before arriving at the decision to reduce the MBBS seats as punishment.
