Anantnag, Jan 03: Health Minister Sakina Itoo Friday made it clear that those opposing the relocation of Maternity and Child Care Hospital (MCCH) in Anantnag and creating hurdles will be held accountable.
Addressing media persons in Anantnag, the minister made these remarks when questioned about the longstanding demand to shift the hospital. “If an accident happens in the future, who will bear the responsibility?”
She said, “Those opposing the shift and creating noise will be responsible if any incident occurs in the future. We have made multiple efforts to move the hospital because its current location is sensitive. It’s being examined, and the department is committed to taking appropriate steps.”
When questioned about building a new hospital instead, she said, “How long does it take to build a hospital? Can it be constructed in a year? If something happens in the meantime, who will be responsible? The government currently has no proposal to build a new hospital, and it would take significant time. Immediate action involves examining the feasibility of shifting the current hospital. Whatever is possible and practical, we will ensure it is done for the people.”
Earlier, health minister said, “Doctors who engage in private practice during service and duty hours will face action. At the same time, doctors who perform well will be appreciated by both the department and the government.”
Regarding funding, the minister said, “Funding is provided by the government based on the needs of hospitals. However, we aim to establish a separate hospital fund, contributed to by doctors and HODs. This fund would address emergencies where patients cannot afford medicines or expensive injections. Hospital authorities will examine the feasibility of this proposal, and we will support them to ensure that emergency patients receive the necessary care.”
Regarding the issue of increasing stipends for MBBS interns from Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000, she said, “As far as I recall, the honorarium is currently Rs 12,000 or Rs 14,000. The government is facing funding challenges and cannot immediately increase it. However, the department is considering the proposal. Many students have approached me with this genuine demand. We will do whatever is possible within the available resources.”
