Ganderbal, Feb 19: In a bid to restore the natural beauty and ecological balance of Gund Nallah, the Rural Development Department (RDD), Block Gund, is set to launch a large-scale cleanliness drive in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district Thursday.
The initiative comes in response to growing concerns over unchecked waste accumulation along the stream, which stretches from the main market to Kullo Mohallah.
An RDD official stated that multiple complaints had been received from residents and shopkeepers regarding garbage piling up on both sides of the stream, leading to pollution and environmental degradation. In response, the department has not only planned a thorough clean-up but has also sought the active involvement of the local market association and community members.
“We are committed to restoring the pristine glory of Gund Nallah. This initiative is not just about cleaning up the area once; it’s about fostering a long-term sense of responsibility among the local population. The support of market traders, shopkeepers, and residents is crucial to ensuring that this effort leads to lasting change,” the official said.
As part of the initiative, a dedicated garbage collection vehicle will be deployed to facilitate proper waste disposal. The department has urged people to use this service instead of dumping rubbish on roads, footpaths, or into the stream.
“We appeal to the public to dispose of waste responsibly and refrain from polluting streets and water bodies. A clean environment benefits everyone, and maintaining it is a collective duty,” the official added. The move has been widely welcomed by locals, who hope that sustained efforts will help maintain the cleanliness and ecological health of the area. Many residents have expressed frustration over the deteriorating condition of Gund Nallah in recent years and believe this initiative could mark a turning point.
Beyond the immediate clean-up, the RDD has also planned an awareness campaign to educate the community about proper waste management and environmental conservation. Efforts will focus on encouraging sustainable practices, such as waste segregation and reducing plastic use, to prevent future pollution.
Early signs of community engagement are already visible, with local volunteers and shopkeepers joining the drive ahead of its official launch. Their involvement underscores a growing commitment to environmental protection and sustainability in the region. With increasing participation and government support, residents are hopeful that Gund Nallah can be restored to its former glory, serving as a cleaner and healthier natural resource for future generations.
