Jammu, Feb 12: Former Indian Navy personnel, who were detained in a Qatar jail since August 2022, have returned to India after their release. This development marks a significant diplomatic victory for India, following intense efforts by the Modi government.
The eight persons, including Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Commander Amit Nagpal, and Sailor Ragesh, were initially sentenced to death by a Qatari court on October 26, 2023. However, due to diplomatic negotiations spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment in December. Subsequently, further diplomatic efforts led to their eventual release and return to India.
In a handout issued here today, the crucial role played by Prime Minister Modi in securing the release of the Navy veterans was acknowledged by the individuals themselves, who expressed their gratitude upon their return. “We are very happy that we are back in India, safely. Definitely, we would like to thank PM Modi as this was only possible because of his personal intervention,” remarked one of them.
India’s successful retrieval of its citizens from challenging situations abroad underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its nationals. Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the Indian government has consistently prioritized the protection of its citizens and utilized diplomatic and military channels effectively to address crises and bring Indians back home safely.
The personal rapport cultivated by Prime Minister Modi with global leaders, including his recent meeting with Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani during the COP28 summit, has played a pivotal role in resolving such diplomatic challenges and ensuring the safe return of Indian nationals from various conflict zones.
“The safe return of the former Indian Navy personnel from Qatar reflects India’s diplomatic prowess under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of its citizens on the global stage.”
