Baramulla, August 29: Police in the Sopore have taken action against a well-known drug trafficker, freezing assets worth Rs. 1.25 crore. Parvaiz Ahmad Bhat, the accused, hailing from Umerabad HMT in Srinagar, had allegedly amassed this substantial sum through illicit drug activities.
Bhat, who was previously apprehended this year for his involvement in narcotics, was placed under arrest under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The police’s actions to seize the unlawfully acquired wealth were unveiled after an extensive investigation conducted by the Bomai Police Station.
This probe centered on Case FIR No. 26 of 2023, framed under Sections 8/22 of the NDPS Act at PS Bomai.
A police official said that Bhat’s bank accounts containing the substantial sum were frozen and subjected to forfeiture proceedings.
The process unfolded in collaboration with the competent authority situated in New Delhi, as per the provisions outlined in Chapter VA of the NDPS Act of 1985.
“The bank balance represents proceeds from drug trafficking, acquired recently and disproportionately to the individual’s known income sources,” the police official said.
