Baramulla, Jan 03: Scores of residents of the Nowpora Jagir area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Tuesday took to the streets and staged a protest demonstration against the irregular power cuts in the area.
The locals said they were being forced to reel under darkness. The protesters, including women, blocked the road connecting Wagoora with Baramulla for hours to further press their demands. The blockade led to a traffic jam due to which dozens of vehicles were stranded on the road for some time.
Mohammad Iqbal, a resident of Nowpora, said they were not receiving adequate power supply and frequent power cuts have become a daily affair leading to problems in the area.
He said the Power Development Department (PDD) was not adhering to any power schedule.
The protestors said they have brought the issue to the notice of the concerned officers several times, but nothing has been done so far.
Later, a team of police and civil administration reached the spot and assured the protesters that they will forward their grievance to the concerned authorities.
Later on, the protestors dispersed peacefully but warned that if the department does not solve their problem they will stage another protest.
An official of the PDD, however, blamed locals for power outages. “The locals are using heaters and boilers which lead to overloading of transformers. We request them to adhere to the justified usage of power,” he said.
