Srinagar, Nov 18: Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Habba Kadal, Shamim Firdous on Monday expressed deep concern over the rising substance abuse issue in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly among young girls.
She said that while the government is taking measures to address the problem, it is crucial for citizens to take responsibility for curbing the menace.
Firdous urged parents to be vigilant about their children’s activities, friendships and acquaintances, as prevention is key. This concern is especially relevant given the alarming rate at which substance abuse is spreading in the region, she said.
The MLA said the issue of young girls and women in Jammu and Kashmir turning to drugs as a coping mechanism for social issues, harassment, domestic violence and relationship problems is alarming. “Many are unaware of the de-addiction process and available resources,” she said.
To combat this issue, the MLA has appealed to civil society, religious leaders, media persons and educators to provide counselling and support to youth. There is a need for expanded rehabilitation facilities and increasing access to treatment centres, she said.
The National Conference leader called for public awareness campaigns, educating the public, especially youth, about addiction and resources, disrupting the drug supply chain, targeting drug networks to curb distribution and focusing on support and recovery rather than punishment.
