Srinagar, May 19: National Conference (NC) President Dr Farooq Abdullah on Monday said the Omar Abdullah-led government is committed to safeguarding the “unique and historical identity” of Jammu and Kashmir. He highlighted the importance of fostering unity and pluralism—values that have long defined the region’s ethos.
Speaking at the party’s headquarters, Nawa-e-Subha, Dr Abdullah, according to a party statement issued here, addressed various delegations from across Jammu and Kashmir. The NC chief acknowledged their concerns regarding the “significant transformations that have occurred since the establishment of the democratically elected government” under Omar Abdullah’s leadership. The visiting delegations raised pressing public issues, to which Dr Farooq assured prompt resolution.
The former chief minister expressed confidence in Omar Abdullah’s leadership, saying the government is dedicated to fulfilling all commitments outlined in the party manifesto. “Our singular motive is to foster unity and enhance public participation in policy formulation,” he said, adding, “Every stakeholder is consulted before any policy decision is made. We are committed to thorough discussions with diverse groups, ensuring that the doors of the secretariat remain open for the public to voice their concerns.”
He urged the people to embrace a spirit of unity, saying, “We cannot achieve progress in Jammu and Kashmir without lasting solidarity among all segments of our society. We must transcend divisions based on religion or sect—be it Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Shia or Sunni. Unity in diversity must be our guiding principle, now and always. Without it, we risk perpetuating our common challenges, such as poverty, unemployment, and underdevelopment. Our discord will only lead us into darkness. Divided, we cannot accomplish anything.”
On the occasion, General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar, Additional General Secretary Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, Provincial President Showkat Ahmad Mir, and MLAs Retired Justice Hasnain Masoodi, Shameema Firdous, Salman Ali Sagar, Ahsan Pardesi, Women’s Wing Provincial President Er Sabiya Qadri, Additional State Spokesperson Sara Hayat Shah were also present.
Meanwhile, Dr Farooq extended heartfelt condolences to the party’s District President Kulgam, Safdar Ali Khan, on the demise of his sister (wife of Muhammad Shafi Khan R/O Kulgam).
In his condolence message, the NC chief extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved household, including Block Secretary Liaqat Ali Khan and prayed for fortitude to them to bear the inconsolable loss. He prayed for peace to the departed soul in the highest echelons of Jannah. The party leaders and functionaries also extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
