New Delhi, Oct 04: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, and other key portfolios, Dr Jitendra Singh announced on Friday that the Northeast will host its first-ever International Science Festival.
Speaking at a press briefing at the National Media Centre, Dr. Singh revealed that the 10th edition of the India International Science Festival (IISF) will take place at IIT Guwahati from November 30 to December 3, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the region’s journey towards becoming a hub for scientific and technological innovation. This event underscores the Government’s commitment to the Northeast and aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to position the region as a critical player in India’s growth story.
Highlighting the significance of the venue, Dr Singh said, “IIT Guwahati is not just one of the nation’s leading institutes, but a symbol of how the Northeast is emerging as a focal point for India’s scientific advancements. Hosting IISF 2024 in the Northeast isn’t just about celebrating science; it’s about placing the region at the heart of India’s scientific future.”
“The decision to hold the festival in Guwahati reflects the government’s broader strategy for inclusive development, especially in historically underrepresented regions,” he said. “The Northeast, rich in natural resources and talent, is an opportunity for the rest of India to recognize and engage with the potential here.”
The theme for IISF 2024, “Transforming India into an S&T-driven Global Manufacturing Hub”, echoes the government’s ambition to integrate science and technology with industrial growth, driving India toward self-reliance and global leadership in manufacturing. This aligns closely with initiatives like ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, focusing on cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and biotechnology.
The Union Minister highlighted the role of science in driving India’s economic future, saying, “The next wave of India’s growth will be powered by advancements in biotechnology, bioeconomy, and space technology. This festival offers a platform to showcase how science will shape the future of our economy, environment, and employment.”
Reflecting on India’s progress under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, Dr Singh highlighted the country’s significant advancements in areas like space exploration, biotechnology, and digital technology. IISF 2024 will further reinforce India’s commitment to becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse driven by scientific innovation.
Dr Jitendra Singh concluded by urging people from across the country to visit the Northeast and experience its vibrant culture, resources, and innovation. “It’s time to bring India closer to the Northeast, a region offering abundant natural resources, sustainable practices, and progressive culture. This festival will showcase the immense potential of the Northeast to the rest of the nation.”
