Ganderbal records highest tempat 34.8°C
Mainly dry &cloudy weather till July 23: Director MeT
Srinagar, July 17: The scorching heatwave persisted across Jammu and Kashmir, with no respite in sight as per forecasts from the local Meteorological Department. Ganderbal recorded the highest temperature in the region at 34.8°C on July 17.
Director of the Meteorological Centre Kashmir, Dr.Mukhtar Ahmad, stated that the heatwave is likely to persist for several days. Srinagar registered 34.2°C, while Jammu recorded a high of 37.8°C on Wednesday.
He said weather will remain partly to generally cloudy with brief and intermittent spells of rain, thundershower at isolated to scattered places in J&K till July 20th.
“From July 21-23, weather will remain mainly generally cloudy with intermittent spells of rain at many places. Intense showers for a brief period with possibility of landslides and mudslides & shooting stones at few vulnerable places,” he said.
Dr Mukhtar, further, said that hot and dry weather conditions are likely to prevail in the plains of Kashmir valley and the hilly regions of Jammu division for next few days.
“As of today, there is no forecast of major rainfall for next 10 days over Jammu and Kashmir. Mostly dry and warm weather is predicted for next 6-7 days. Local thunderstorm/ short period rainfall can occur towards late afternoon/evening at few places,” he added.
Briefing about the details, analysis of weather data over the past decade in July highlights some noteworthy trends and record-breaking figures.
As per MeT data, Srinagar recorded 32.5°C as the maximum temperature and 19.0°C as minimum temperature. Ski resort Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a high of 21.6 degrees Celsius and 12.1 as minimum temperatures.
Health resort Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded 25.4°C as maximum temperature and 13.1°C as the minimum temperature. Kokernag recorded 27.6°C as the maximum temperature, 16.1°C as minimum temperature. Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded maximum temperatures of 30.9°C and 17.1
Meanwhile, Jammu is witnessing hot and humid weather conditions and recorded at 34.0°C as maximum temperature and 25.4 as minimum temperatures. Katra recorded 30.7°C and 18.8°C as the minimum temperature.
Baramulla, 35.1°C, Bandipora 31.5°C, Budgam 30.8°C, Ganderbal 34.8°C, Pulwama 31.6 °C, Anantnag 31.1 °C, Shopian 31.4°C, Banihal 28.9°C, Bhaderwah 30.4°C, Batote 26.6°C.
The MeT spokesman said during the past 10 years from 2014 to 2024, the maximum temperatures in May have ranged from 28.5°C to 31.9°C. Minimum temperatures have varied between 5.0°C and 9.8°C.
A traffic police spokesman said that during the past 24 hours, there was slow movement observed on Srinagar-Jammu highway due to breakdown of 07 HMVs, single lane traffic at Dalwas, Mehad and between Marog&KishtwriPather.
Subject to fair weather and better road conditions on Friday, SANJY convoy /LMVs Passenger/Private Cars shall be allowed from both sides on Jammu-Srinagar NHW (NH-44) viz from Jammu towards Srinagar and vice-versa,” he said.
On Kishtwar- Sinthan- Anantnag NH-244, Vehicular movement (only LMVs) on Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag road shall be allowed from both sides vizAnantnag towards Kishtwar and vice versa.
“These vehicles shall be allowed from Daksum and Chingam (Chatroo) between 0900 hrs to 1300 hrs. No vehicle shall be allowed after cut off timing,” he said.
The spokesman said that one way traffic for LMVs/HMVs from Kargil towards Srinagar on Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumari road shall be allowed.
“LMVs followed by HMVs shall be allowed from Minamarg towards Srinagar at 0630 hrs. to 1100 hrs. Similarly, LMVs followed by HMVs shall be allowed from Sonamarg towards Kargil at 1300 hrs to 1700 hrs. No vehicle shall be allowed after cut off timings,” he said.
On historic Mughal Road, vehicular movement (LMVs followed by HMVs upto 10 tyre) on Mughal road shall be allowed from both sides viz. from Poonch towards Shopian and vice versa.
“These vehicles shall be allowed from Behramgalla (Buffliaz) and Herpora (Shopian) at 0600 hrs. upto 1800 hrs. No vehicle shall be allowed after cut off timings,” he said.
