Respite from heatwave likely in the region: Director MeT
Jammu records 42.7°C, Srinagar at 31. °C
Srinagar, June 03: Over the past two weeks, Jammu and Kashmir has been grappling with an intense heatwave and Meteorological Department has forecasted light rains starting from Tuesday. The rains are expected to provide much-needed relief from the scorching heat until June 08, officials said.
The Director of the Meteorological Department (MeT), Dr.Mukhtar Ahmad told Rising Kashmir that they were expecting light to moderate rains in Kashmir and Jammu divisions and are expected to bring relief from the hot and dry weather conditions in the region.
He said between 4th-7th June, weather will remain partly to generally cloudy with intermittent light to moderate rain at many places with gusty winds at few places. Few places may receive moderate intensity showers for a brief period, Dr Mukhtar said.
“Farmers are advised to suspend farm operations or agriculture activities particularly on 05 & 06 June due to erratic weather. This spell of light to moderate rainfall in the coming days but there is no possibility of heavy rainfall activity during the period,” he added.
Dr Mukhtar said that there would be some relief from heat as day temperature during the next couple of days was expected to drop a few degrees Celsius. In the next 24 hours , mostly dry weather is expected across Jammu and Kashmir, he added.
As per MeT data, following dry weather Srinagar recorded 31.7°C as the maximum temperature and 14.4°C as minimum temperature. Ski resort Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a high of 22.0 degrees Celsius and 9.5 as minimum temperatures.
Health resort Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded 27.5°C as maximum temperature and 7.1°C as the minimum temperature. Kokernag recorded 30.5°C as the maximum temperature, 13.2°C as minimum temperature. Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded maximum temperatures of 31.0°C.
Meanwhile Jammu witnessed hot weather conditions during the day, sizzled at 42.7°C as maximum temperature and 25.6 °C as minimum temperatures. Katra also recorded the day temperature at 39.0°C and 24.6°C as the minimum temperature.
The MeT spokesman said during the past 10 years from 2014 to 2024, the maximum temperatures in May have ranged from 28.5°C to 31.9°C. Minimum temperatures have varied between 5.0°C and 9.8°C.
