Srinagar, Oct 25: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha called on the youth of Jammu and Kashmir to embody the teachings of the revered 14th-century saint-poet Lalleshwari, also known as Lal Ded. Speaking at the opera “Lal Ba Drayas,” held at the University of Kashmir and organised by organized by the Art of Living Foundation, J&K Academy of Art Culture & Languages, and Kashmir University, Sinha underscored the importance of truth, compassion, and unity in shaping a harmonious future for the region.
The event, featuring local artists and cultural organizations, celebrated Kashmir’s rich heritage while emphasizing the need for community cohesion amid contemporary challenges.
Highlighting the importance of art as a means of preserving culture and fostering unity, the LG said, “Programs like this help shape our identity and remind us of the power of our cultural heritage.” He emphasized that such initiatives act as a bridge connecting the past, present, and future, promoting unity among diverse communities.
Recalling Lal Ded’s contributions, LG Sinha remarked, “Lal Ded’s influence stretches far beyond the boundaries of time. Her life and teachings resonate as deeply today as they did in the 14th century. Her spiritual wisdom and poetic brilliance awakened an entire society to new possibilities.” He called upon the youth, whom he described as “torchbearers of India’s composite culture and values,” to draw inspiration from Lal Ded’s teachings of truth, honesty, and patience.
The opera, conceptualized by Vandana Daftari, Regional Director of the Art of Living, featured direction by Arshid Mushtaq and music by Raja Bilal. It conveyed messages of universal brotherhood and oneness, capturing the essence of Lal Ded’s poetry. Daftari expressed pride in the initiative that brought together local artists, including noted music director Pandit Kishan Langoo, to convey a message of peace through theatrical performance.
During his address, LG Sinha praised the collaborative efforts behind the opera, stating that the event honors the timeless values taught by Lal Ded, which continue to shape society. He further encouraged the youth to reconnect with their cultural roots, stressing, “You are the future of this land, the torchbearers of its rich traditions and values. Lal Ded’s teachings will guide you at every step, showing you that there is nothing greater than truth, honesty, and patience.”
The Lt Governor highlighted that Lal Ded’s story teaches resilience, inner strength, and the ability to turn adversity into opportunities for growth. He observed, “Her teachings guide us along a path of truth, urging us to embark on a journey of inner exploration, cleansing the soul, and seeking purity in every action.”
Referring to the power of Lal Ded’s voice, he said, “In a society where women’s voices were often silenced, Lal Ded’s voice rang out, powerful and clear, and that voice still echoes through the centuries.”
The event, attended by dignitaries including Prof. Nilofer Khan, Vice Chancellor of Kashmir University, Principal Secretary of Culture Department Suresh Kumar Gupta, and several art lovers and students, was a blend of music, dance, and spirituality, emphasizing Lal Ded’s teachings of love, compassion, and self-realization.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha conducted an on-site inspection today to review the progress of key infrastructure and Smart City projects in Srinagar. During his visit, he assessed several significant sites, including the Noor Jehan Bridge in Qamarwari, the Wooden Pedestrian Bridge at Amira Kadal, and the Jhelum Riverfront Development project extending from the Right River Bank beyond JK Arts Emporium to Amira Kadal. The Lt Governor directed officers and implementing agencies to expedite the completion of these projects within a specified timeframe.
Additionally, Sinha visited Srinagar Square and Lal Chowk, where he interacted with local shopkeepers and traders to understand their concerns and suggestions.
He was accompanied by key officials, including Bhupinder Kumar, Secretary of Public Works (R&B); Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir; Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat, Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar; Dr. Owais Ahmed, CEO of Srinagar Smart City Limited; and other senior officers.
