Devoted and determined, a 19-year-old youth had his sights set on the prestigious IITs or NITs, drawn by the allure of these top-tier institutions known for fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. He believed that a solid academic foundation, coupled with the rich ecosystem of these institutes, would provide the ideal launchpad for his entrepreneurial aspirations. However, fate had other plans in store. Defying the odds, he chose to think differently and carved his own path.
Meet Hurair Reyaz, from Kulgam who has changed the usual pursuit of keeping just eyes on a single ambition and without wasting his time and energy he choose the second option in life and set up a reading room in Dooru Anantnag.
Earlier, however, the path to his dream was full of challenges. Hurair appeared for the JEE exam in 2024 but fell short of securing a seat in his desired institution. Undeterred, he chose to explore alternative avenues while continuing his pursuit of higher education.
Recognizing the need for a conducive study environment for students, Hurair established a reading room. This venture was born out of necessity rather than a calculated business move. “I needed a way to support myself financially while continuing my studies,” Hurair said. “A reading space seemed like a practical solution.” This decision marked the inception of his entrepreneurial journey.
Hurair’s study space is more than just a place for students to sit and study. Equipped with comfortable seating, adequate lighting, and high-speed internet, the space offers students an escape from the distractions of home. The success of the study space is a testament to Hurair’s ability to identify a need and provide a solution.
However, the study space is merely the first step on Hurair’s entrepreneurial ladder. His ultimate goal is to build a scalable business that creates opportunities for others. “The study space is a learning experience,” he says, adding, “It is providing me with a bit of valuable insights into running a business. Once I complete my college admissions, I will dedicate myself full-time to building a startup.”
Hurair’s decision to combine studies with entrepreneurship is a testament to his ambition and resilience. Hurair’s story is a beacon of hope. By choosing to create his own opportunities, Hurair is inspiring others to think beyond traditional career paths.
“The reading room is currently fully occupied, which tells a different story as well. It is encouraging to see students turning to reading rooms and libraries, a positive sign for society. The reading culture needs to be given more space and encouragement to ensure that both boys and girls move in the right direction. I’ve tried to do my part, and this venture is now allowing me to dedicate more time to my studies while also earning a little to support my family,” he said.
The young boy’s journey is still unfolding. As he balances his academic pursuits with the demands of running a business, Hurair is gaining invaluable experience. His story is a reminder that success doesn’t always follow a linear path. It is about seizing opportunities, learning from setbacks, and persevering in the face of challenges.
What sets Hurair apart is his ability to think strategically. While the study space is successfully running, he is already looking beyond it. He is actively exploring potential business ideas and networking. His vision extends beyond personal success; he aims to create a ripple effect, inspiring and employing many other youngsters in Kashmir.
His determination to build a successful business is not just about personal gain; it is about contributing to the growth of his community. As he continues to navigate the complexities of both worlds, his journey is being watched with keen interest.
