Srinagar, Dec 26:Scores of Kashmiri shawl sellers, predominantly from Kupwara, have alleged harassment by locals in Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur district, with many claiming they are being pressured to leave the region.
The traders, who have been working in the area for decades, shared videos highlighting continuous intimidation, stating it has severely impacted their ability to conduct business.
Despite having valid documentation and proper verification, these shawl sellers report being barred from working and their landlords are allegedly being pressured to evict them. This recurring issue has sparked outrage among community leaders and organizations in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association has expressed concern over the situation and urged Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to intervene. According to the Association, incidents of harassment against Kashmiri traders have been reported multiple times in the past, reflecting a worrying trend that needs immediate attention.
In response, officials from the Himachal Pradesh government have assured strict action against those responsible. They emphasized the importance of maintaining a secure and respectful environment for all traders in the state and urged the affected sellers to register formal complaints to address the issue effectively.
Meanwhile, BJP District President Kupwara Javaid Qureshi has also called for swift action to resolve the matter, warning that failure to address the grievances could lead to protests.
