Srinagar, May 30: Five entrepreneurs from Kashmir have created a radio frequency (RF) transmission alert system prototype for emergency vehicles like ambulance, fire tenders and other similar ones to get around traffic jams on the main highways or traffic crossings.
They claim that the transmitter gadget, which will be installed on traffic signal poles, can identify the vehicle one km before it arrives at a busy intersection or specific location. It will sound an alert, show the same message on an LCD screen, reroute traffic away from alternate roads, and give emergency vehicles safe passage.
The innovators include Er. Manan Sajad Malik, (Former student of Institute of Technology) Farhana Fayaz Batoo, Mueed Ahmad Chishti, B-tech 7th semester students, (IOT Zakura campus), Dr Abdul Mueed Hafiz (Assistant Professor) and Dr. Rouf Ul Alam Bhat (Assistant professor) from IOT Zakura campus University of Kashmir
Talking to Rising Kashmir, Er. Manan Sajad Malik said the problem of urban traffic congestion is constantly spreading and the junctions are designed more and more which try to control the traffic but unfortunately fail in processing so.
“The increase in traffic is due to the growing number of vehicles and the limited expansion of roads. Our project focuses on the severe impact caused by traffic congestion on the emergency vehicle transportation system,” he said.
Malik says in places such as India and Thailand where the road width and length prove to be impossible to create a separate lane for emergency vehicles, it is difficult for ambulances to navigate through the traffic.
“Congestion problem is a fact which contributed to a large impact on the transport system in the country. This causes many problems especially when there are emergency cases at traffic light junctions which are always busy with so many vehicles,” he said.
Malik said a congestion control system is designed in order to solve these problems. This system is designed in such a way that it should be activated when it receives a signal from an ambulance based on radio frequency (RF) transmission and uses a microcontroller to make announcements.
“Same will be displayed on the LCD placed on the junction and will glow Green light at the junction points towards that particular route and Red light towards other routes of that particular junction,” he said.
Malik said this system will lessen accidents which often happen at the traffic light intersections because other vehicles had to gather together for giving a special route to emergency vehicles. As a result, this project is successful and implementing wireless communication i.e. the radio frequency (RF) transmission in the traffic light control system for emergency vehicles like ambulances, he said.
“The main aim of this project is to design a system which is capable of making announcements. Same announcement will be displayed on the LCD placed on the junction and will glow Green light at the junction points towards that particular route and Red light towards other routes of that particular junction,” Malik said.
He said they propose a system for detecting the Ambulances that are to be passed through the junctions by making an announcement before it reaches that particular junction.
“The system will be Radio Frequency module based which will have the Receiver placed on the junction points attached with Loud speaker, LCD and Green and Red signal lights and the Transmitter will be placed on the 1km distance from that particular junction,” Malik said.
The young innovator says that the Transmitter will be further connected with the RF Reader which will detect the Chip placed on the Ambulance. Whenever the Ambulance comes in the 1km range of the junction, the FR Reader will detect the chip and will send a wirelessly signal to the junction point by using RF Module.
“Then it will make the announcement at the junction and the same will be displayed on the LCD placed on the junction. Green light will glow towards that specific route and Red light towards other routes. The traffic police will get notified by that particular announcement and Signal lights which will help in reducing traffic congestion at that specific point,” he said.
Malik says their project can be used for any emergency vehicles including ambulances, fire tender vehicles, essential services and VIP convoys or delegates. Our project prototype is completely ready and it can be used in Srinagar Smart City Projects as well,” he said.
The same set of innovators had previously created a method for detecting and ventilating carbon monoxide from enclosed places. The gadget may also provide respite from apparent life-threatening situations like coal mines and tunnels under roads where the levels of monoxide are always high.
