Srinagar, Apr 15: Kashmir is all set to have round-the-clock electricity in the next two years, according to officials from the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL). This is a welcome announcement from the KPDCL, which is determined to ensure adequate power supply to the residents of the region, even in challenging times.
KPDCL Chief Engineer, Javed Yousuf Dar, said that the government is taking several measures to ensure an uninterrupted power supply in the valley. The KPDCL has already installed over 90,000 smart meters, and the process is still ongoing, with the government planning to install more.
In addition, the KPDCL has launched an online facility for consumers where they can apply for new connections. This service, which allows consumers to register themselves online, has simplified the procedure, thus saving time and enhancing efficiency.
Commenting on the current state of affairs, Chief Engineer Dar said,  “At present, consumers can only avail  postpaid services. However, the KPDCL is planning to launch a prepaid facility shortly, which would be more beneficial to the consumers.”
The announcement has been received positively by the residents of the region, who have been grappling with mounting power cuts for years. Overall, the residents are happy with the government’s efforts to address the power issues and provide them with adequate electricity.
The government’s commitment to the welfare of the people of Kashmir is evident in its efforts to ensure a consistent power supply to the region. It is vital to note that access to electricity is critical for socio-economic development, and the government’s efforts to improve the power supply will undoubtedly lead to economic growth and increased employment.
Overall, the KPDCL’s efforts to ensure a 24/7 power supply in Kashmir in the next two years are commendable. The government’s decision to install smart meters and launch an online facility for new connections is a step in the right direction towards enhancing efficiency and convenience.
These measures will undoubtedly result in a significant change in the power supply scenario in the region, thus making life easier for the residents of Kashmir.

KPDCL makes prepaid mode mandatory for new electricity connections
To keep pace with state of art technology coupled with empowering consumers with transparency, the  Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) shall register all prospective consumers applying for new electric connections on prepaid basis.
The Lt. Governor has already launched the Smart Bill Sahuliyat APP(PWA) , SMART BS on February 27, 2023 to start the new era of transparency where consumers can check, manage and pay their bills on the same portal.
With this major step towards better reforms, consumers who are applying for new connections shall be provided smart meters with prepaid functionality for bill payment
The consumers applying for new connections have to apply online at the website www.kpdcl.jkpdd.net. The consumer shall deposit the security deposit and first prepaid recharge corresponding to sanctioned load to energize the smart meter.
Consumers can additionally make use of any choice of online payment gateway including “mpay” or can even recharge through JK Bank Branch in the same manner as postpaid bill payment. The new smart meter shall be provided and Installed by KPDCL.
