Jammu, Oct 18: Senior leaders of the J&K National Panthers Party, led by President Vilakshan Singh, paid heartfelt tributes to the Jammu Student Martyrs during a solemn ceremony, which marked the anniversary of their deaths at the hands of police during a student movement in 1966.
The protest, which began on October 16, 1966, resulted in the deaths of three students—Brij Mohan, Subhash Chandra, and Gulshan Handa—at GGM College, while another student leader, Gurcharan Singh, was killed on October 18 in Kanak Mandi during a student procession, the party said in a press release, adding that these events sparked widespread outrage and injuries to hundreds of students, many of whom sustained severe injuries, losing limbs in the chaos.
Recalling the tragic events, Vilakshan Singh highlighted the courage of Prof Bhim Singh, the chief organiser of the student movement, who narrowly escaped police gunfire during the protests. Singh said, “On that day, thousands of students marched through the streets of Jammu, demanding justice for those murdered. This movement laid the foundation for numerous educational institutions in Jammu Pradesh.”
During his address, Vilakshan criticised the current government and called for continued activism. “What Jammu has achieved has always come through agitations,” he said. He urged current students to remember the sacrifices made by their predecessors and to unite against any form of discrimination faced by the people of Jammu.
Other notable figures who paid tribute included party leaders Naresh Chib, Rakesh Gupta, Sanjeev Verma and Sanju Bhagat, who highlighted the importance of remembering and honouring the legacy of the student martyrs.
The JKNPP leaders called for enhanced organisation among student bodies across Jammu and Kashmir to effectively advocate for the rights and welfare of the Dogra community.
