Jammu and Kashmir, since its transition to a Union Territory, has undergone a remarkable transformation in infrastructure, particularly in road and bridge connectivity. These developments have not only enhanced connectivity but have also spurred economic growth and generated employment opportunities across the region.
The PradhanMantri Gram SadakYojana (PMGSY) has been instrumental in this transformation, with over 99 percent of the sanctioned program achieved by March 2023. A staggering 21,407 kilometers of roads have been constructed under PMGSY I, II, and III, connecting 2,140 rural habitations and significantly improving accessibility.
Official data accessed by Rising Kashmir reveals that under the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), 1,057 road and bridge projects have been sanctioned since 2019-20, amounting to Rs. 4,550 crores. Notably, Jammu and Kashmir spent over Rs. 500 crores in a single financial year for the first time in 2022-23, indicating accelerated development.
The Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) has further bolstered infrastructure development, with 294 major road and bridge projects sanctioned since 2000, at an estimated cost of Rs. 4,315 crores. Remarkably, 163 projects have been completed, signifying significant progress.
Focus on macadamization programs has ensured the maintenance and renewal of road surfaces, with over 16,807 kilometers of roads macadamized from 2020 to 2023 alone. This has not only improved road quality but has also enhanced the overall travel experience for residents and tourists alike.
Bridges, crucial for connectivity in the UT’s rugged terrain, have also seen substantial progress. With 290 bridges completed in the last five years, and 338 under construction, connectivity across rivers and streams has been significantly enhanced.
The Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP) has been pivotal in funding key projects, including the construction of tunnels, flyovers, and bypasses. Several tunnels and flyovers nearing completion promise to further improve connectivity and reduce travel time.
National Highway projects, including the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra expressway, have witnessed significant progress. With over Rs. 9,994 crores spent and 476.99 kilometers of highways constructed, travel between major cities has become more efficient.
Additionally, the tendering and execution of various infrastructure projects, including tunnels, flyovers, and bypasses, underscore the commitment to improving connectivity and infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.
