Srinagar, Mar 01: In a stringent crackdown on drug abuse, the Jammu and Kashmir Police has apprehended 62 drug peddlers, including notorious offenders, in Baramulla district during January and February this year. The offenders have been booked under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act, officials disclosed.
Highlighting the severity of the clampdown, a police official revealed the seizure of properties, including three residential houses, one shopping complex, two i20 cars, and one Scooty, collectively valued at 1.1 crores. Additionally, contraband and psychotropic substances worth 35.02 lakh, with significant quantities of brown sugar, heroin, charas, cannabis powder, SpasmoProxyvon Plus tablets, and Codeine Phosphate syrups, have been confiscated since January 1.
The recovered contraband, with a black market value, includes 397 grams of brown sugar valued at 5.16 lakh, 1.8 grams of heroin valued at 2.56 lakh, 2.308 kgs of charas valued at 11.54 lakh, 23.5 kgs of cannabis powder valued at 15.27 lakh, 672 tablets of SpasmoProxyvon Plus valued at 00.40 lakh, and 43 syrups of Codeine Phosphate valued at 00.09 lakh.
The public has been urged to collaborate with the police in combating the drug menace, with assurances from the authorities of stringent action against criminals in accordance with the law.
Meanwhile, on Friday, properties worth approximately 36 lakhs belonging to notorious drug peddlers, including MohdZahid Shah (Geelani), Ahtisham-ud-Din Khan, and Reyaz Ahmad Ganie, have been attached by the police under the NDPS Act. The vehicles include two i20 cars, Scooty, the spokesman said.
These actions were linked with ongoing cases under various sections of the NDPS Act, with properties identified as illegally acquired during the investigation.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla, Amod Ashok Nagpure, affirmed the peaceful security situation in the district, with significant control over heinous crimes and a noticeable decline in law-and-order disturbances. He reiterated the police’s commitment to eliminating drugs, terrorism, and fear from society as a top priority.
