Srinagar, July17: Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Law and Order, Vijay Kumar said that the Jammu and Kashmir Police is an impartial and apolitical force.
Talking to reporters during his visit to Zadibal, Srinagar, on Youm-e-Ashoora (Muharram 10th), he said that, as in previous years, the J&K Police have set up stalls at various locations for the convenience of mourners.
When asked about DGP R.R. Swain’s controversial statement claiming that Kashmir-based political parties were “cultivating terrorist network leaders for electoral gains,” ADGP Vijay Kumar said that J&K Police are an apolitical and impartial force.”
“DGP’s statement may reflect his personal opinion. Otherwise, the J&K Police are purely apolitical and work impartially,” ADGP Kumar said.
He said there is a significant role of the police in society and mentioned that they have provided security to ensure the smooth conduct of Muharram processions across Jammu and Kashmir.
Kumar also visited the Zadibal area for Youm-i-Ashoora, overseeing the arrangements for the occasion. He paid tribute to the martyrs of Karbala and said that adequate measures had been taken to ensure the smooth observance of Youm-i-Ashoora.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir Zone, V K Birdhi also visited Zadibal to oversee the arrangements.
He said that police have made adequate arrangements to ensure that mourners won’t face any hardships on the occasion.
IGP Birdi said three tier security cover was placed for Muharram processions in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir. Coordination with other security agencies, have made comprehensive plans to maintain law and order.
“Special measures were placed for and there was deployment of additional forces, traffic management, and security checks at various points have been implemented to prevent any untoward incidents,” he said.
The IGP Kashmir urged the public to cooperate with the authorities and adhere to the guidelines to ensure a peaceful observance of the solemn occasion.
“Few miscreants had been booked for violating the guidelines during the 8th Muharram processions in Srinagar, and an investigation is ongoing in the case,” he said.
