Srinagar, May 08: Janata Dal (United) Jammu and Kashmir president, G M Shaheen on Thursday appealed to the Lieutenant Governor’s administration and the central government to immediately rehabilitate the border residents severely affected by the recent unprovoked shelling by Pakistani forces.
Shaheen expressed deep concern over the tragic loss of innocent lives and the widespread destruction caused by the relentless shelling, stating that thousands of people have been affected in the past two days alone.
“Residents along the Line of Control are living in a state of fear as casualties continue to rise,” Shaheen said. He urged the authorities to urgently establish temporary shelters and ensure medical assistance is provided to the displaced population without delay.
The JD(U) leader further highlighted that the Pakistani shelling was not confined to Poonch, but also impacted the forward areas of Rajouri in Jammu region, as well as the Uri, Karnah, and Tangdhar sectors in Kupwara district.
“The shelling has left a trail of destruction—damaged homes, shattered shops, burnt vehicles, and streets littered with debris and bloodstains. Even heritage landmarks such as the historic Poonch Fort and ancient temples have not been spared,” he said. “More than 150 residents from Dhaki village have been forced to seek refuge in the homes of their relatives after their own houses were extensively damaged.”
Shaheen added, “We strongly condemn Pakistan for deliberately targeting civilian populations. This act once again exposes Pakistan’s hostile and inhumane behaviour.”
He hailed the bravery and strength of the security forces and congratulated them for giving a strong and befitting reply to Pakistani forces. “Our Army is strong, and our people stand shoulder to shoulder with our soldiers. We salute their courage and resilience. We have the strongest army in the world, and we believe it will respond to Pakistan’s provocations with strength and determination,” he said.
The JD(U) leader expressed solidarity with the border communities and demanded immediate relief measures and long-term rehabilitation for all those affected.
