Srinagar, June 28: Over 300,000 pilgrims have registered for the annual Amarnath Yatra, which is set to begin on July 1 until August 31, according to officials.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), Dr Mandeep Bhandari, addressed reporters in Srinagar and provided an update on the registration process. He stated that registration for the Yatra commenced on April 17, and thus far, a total of 304,000 pilgrims have registered through various means.
This year’s Amarnath Yatra will span 62 days, making it the longest Yatra in history. To ensure the safety and convenience of the pilgrims, the tracks leading to the holy cave have been maintained and widened. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has also upgraded the infrastructure along the twin routes. In terms of disaster management, the Shrine Board, in collaboration with the Union Territory (UT) administration, has taken significant measures. This includes widening the tracks and covering dangerous slopes. Additionally, mountain rescue teams will be stationed along the route to promptly respond to any emergencies.
To maintain the sanctity of the pilgrimage site, CEO Bhandari announced that this year, Yatris will not be permitted to stay overnight near the holy cave. Only security forces and langer employees (those responsible for serving food to devotees) will be allowed to stay in the vicinity to prevent any untoward incidents.
CEO Bhandari urged the pilgrims to be mindful of the environment and use dustbins for their garbage along the treks and camps, emphasizing the importance of preserving the cleanliness of the mountains.
Both the Shrine Board and the UT administration have been working closely to ensure a successful Yatra. All arrangements and facilities have been finalized for a smooth pilgrimage experience, from the entry point in Kathua to the holy Amarnath cave. The first batch of Yatris is scheduled to depart from Jammu on July 1, with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and other dignitaries flagging off the event.
