Srinagar, Jun 23: People’s Democratic Front (PDF) president and former Minister, Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen on Monday urged the Jammu and Kashmir administration to finalise all necessary arrangements for the upcoming holy month of Muharram, especially in the valley.
In a statement issued here, Yaseen alleged that over administration had repeatedly failed in the past to provide adequate facilities during Muharram, despite numerous assurances made to the public and religious leaders.
He said the lack of proper planning and implementation has caused immense difficulties for mourners and devotees who participate in religious processions and rituals during this important period.
“Each time, the administration gives assurances, but on the ground, the situation remains unchanged. The same issues resurface year after year, poor sanitation, traffic mismanagement, lack of drinking water and electricity, and inadequate medical support near Imambaras and procession routes,” he said.
He stressed the importance of making special arrangements in key Shia-majority areas, where large Muharram processions are expected. He also urged the authorities to remain in constant touch with local community representatives, religious scholars, and civil society groups to ensure smooth coordination and effective response.
Calling for a sincere and sensitive approach, the former minister said, “Muharram is not only a time of deep spiritual reflection but also a symbol of sacrifice and unity. The government must respect these sentiments and ensure that devotees can observe their religious duties with peace, dignity, and without any inconvenience.”
Hakeem appealed to the Lieutenant Governor-led administration and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to issue clear directives to all concerned departments—including health, power, water, municipal bodies, and traffic police—to ensure uninterrupted essential services and maintain law and order during the Muharram days.
“The credibility of the government’s commitment will only be proven through action, not mere statements,” he said.
