Bandipora, Apr 07: Union Secretary to the Government of India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Leena Nandan on Friday said the government is committed to promoting the ecotourism of Wular, Asia’s largest freshwater lake.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of her visit to the Wular lake in Bandipora, Nandan said the government will ensure boosting and promoting ecotourism in the lake besides uplifting the socio-economic conditions of the local population.
“Siltation is a major challenge in the lake. Fortunately, it has been taken on a large scale, and we have succeeded in tackling this issue,” she said.
Nandan said the Central government is committed to the well-being of the local communities whose livelihood is on the lake, besides the promotion of tourism.
“The Central government has prioritised the conservation of Wular lake and tapping the vast ecotourism potential of the site,” the Union Secretary said while assuring that the government will extend funding support for the lake.
