Pulwama, Jan 05: Nestled with the serene forests of Tral in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, the frozen Panner dam has emerged as a new tourist destination where scores of tourists could be seen spending time and clicking selfies every day.
Situated approximately eight kilometres from Tral’s tehsil headquarters, the dam, surrounded by majestic mountains, captivates visitors with its natural beauty.
Originally constructed in 1971 to supply water to neighbouring rain-fed areas, the dam has of late, gained attention as a tourist spot.
Locally known as Panner dam, it is strategically positioned in a low-lying area to collect rainwater from the surrounding mountains during the winter. The reservoir remains filled with crystal-clear water until around September before it begins to dry up.
During summers, the dam transforms into a picturesque lake, attracting numerous visitors. Tahseen Ahmad, a local resident, described it as a popular picnic spot. “This is a must-visit destination for many people during the summer,” he said.
In winter, the dam’s water freeze, which turns it into a stunning frozen lake. This natural phenomenon draws local youth and tourists alike, who flock to the site for photography and leisure.
“These days, young people from various areas come here to take photographs and selfies,” Ahmad added. He mentioned that some even enjoy walking on the frozen surface of the lake.
The picturesque dam has also caught the attention of YouTubers who film the spot and encourage tourists to explore its beauty.
Shehnaz Akhter, a tourist from New Delhi, visited Panner Dam after watching a YouTube video. She found the location mesmerizing and urged others to experience its charm.
“This place is truly enchanting,” she remarked, encouraging her fellow countrymen to visit when in Kashmir.
