Srinagar, Feb 14: The Bandipora-Gurez road in north Kashmir set up a record by remaining closed only for 17 days in 2024, a significant milestone achieved by the authorities from its seasonal closure to minimal closure.
The Bandipora-Gurez Road in Bandipora district, the sole lifeline connecting the Gurez Valley to the outside world, has witnessed a remarkable reduction in its seasonal closures. Historically burdened with closures lasting up to six months, the road has achieved a record minimal closure of just 17 days in 2024 so far.
According to data available with Rising Kashmir, a substantial improvement over the years, with the road being closed for 134 days in 2021, 59 days in 2022, and 58 days in 2023.
An official attributed the minimal closure to the procurement of advanced machinery and the strategic induction of additional equipment and personnel to ensure efficient snow clearance and maintenance operations. “The infusion of new, highly technological machines, coupled with an increase in the workforce, has played a pivotal role in minimizing the closure duration,” he said.
Despite challenging sub-zero temperatures, dedicated workers have tirelessly contributed to the road’s accessibility, further enhancing connectivity to the Gurez Valley, he added.
The official said that during the 17 days of closure, they ensured uninterrupted connectivity by implementing helicopter services to address any medical emergencies and accommodate candidates with exams or other urgent matters.
“We are committed to providing essential services and seamless connectivity for the residents of Gurez during challenging circumstances and are at the forefront in mitigating the impact of harsh weather conditions on the only vital transportation route connecting Gurez to the rest of the world,” he added.
