Srinagar, Sep 29: A terrorist was killed in an ongoing encounter between security forces and terrorists in the remote Kog (Mandli) area of Billawar, Kathua district, on Sunday. This brings the death toll in the operation to two, as search efforts continue, according to officials.
Addressing the media, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Jammu Zone, Anand Jain, confirmed that the encounter resulted in the death of one terrorist. On Saturday, Head Constable Bashir Ahmed of the J&K Police made the ultimate sacrifice while engaging the terrorist. “Slain cop fired at the terrorist and received mortal wounds in return,” said ADGP Jain. “Our thoughts are with the brave personnel and his family.”
ADGP Jain further noted that two other injured officers—Deputy Superintendent of Police (Operations) Sukhbir and ASI Niaz Ahmed—are in stable condition and receiving treatment at a hospital.
Search operations in the area are ongoing as officials believe there were four terrorists present during the encounter. Regarding the slain terrorist’s identity, ADGP Jain said, “As per our inputs, he is a foreign terrorist. Further details will be shared after the search operation concludes.”
He added that the terrorist was hiding in a residential house, and the operation was initiated based on a tip-off. “The search for the remaining terrorist is still ongoing. Anti-terror operations will continue with the same intensity,” Jain affirmed.
Regarding the security situation ahead of the third phase of assembly elections scheduled for October 1, ADGP Jain assured that robust security measures have been implemented across Jammu, Samba, and Kathua districts to ensure smooth and peaceful polling. Additional forces have been deployed to safeguard residential areas and polling stations, while security personnel continue to conduct search operations targeting suspected terrorist hideouts in forested regions.
Meanwhile, an encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district on Sunday evening.
“Based on specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists, a joint search operation was launched by the security forces at Manail Gali under Thanamandi Police Station in Rajouri,” the ADGP, Jammu Zone, said in a post on X.
“Contact has been established, and a few rounds have been fired from both sides. The area was cordoned off. Further details awaited,” it added.
