Anantnag, Jan 09: In an unusual turn of events, the Maternity and Child Care Hospital (MCCH) Anantnag had to suspend routine operations on Thursday after a pipe leakage caused waterlogging in the routine operation theatre, prompting authorities to halt its functioning.
A doctor, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that water started leaking on Tuesday, leading to electric shocks in the operation theatre. This resulted in the suspension of operations in the affected area.
“The emergency theatre was made operational, but the routine theatre remained closed as of Thursday evening. Repair teams are working, and routine operations are likely to resume by Saturday,” the doctor said.
He added, “The entire floor is waterlogged, and the room is unsafe due to electric shocks. It is unclear whether the issue stems from a burst tank—a common problem during winters—or leaking pipes. However, electricians acted swiftly to resolve the issue in the emergency theatre, allowing us to resume work there.”
The doctor further said that electricians, plumbers, and other repair teams had been working throughout the day, and routine laparoscopic operations would likely resume soon.
Dr. Wani Shahid Ahmad, Medical Superintendent of MCCH, said that the Emergency operation theatre (OT) remained fully functional without any disruption.
“Only routine laparoscopic procedures were suspended on Thursday due to a leaking pipe in the laparoscopic OT to ensure patient safety,” Dr. Shahid said.
He added, “Two routine cases have been postponed until Friday. However, all emergency cases are being operated on in the fully functional Emergency OT. By 4 PM, we had performed nine major surgeries in the Emergency OT.”
