Srinagar, July 26: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri on Friday said the decision to grant an additional summer vacation for schools across the valley is not feasible at the moment.
The decision will be made based on the prevailing weather conditions, the Div Com said while addressing the media persons here.
Bidhuri said that due to the ongoing heatwave, school timings across the valley have been adjusted to accommodate the students’ needs. “The curriculum for the academic session is being followed, and school timings have been altered to ensure the students’ well-being,” he said.
The Divisional Commissioner said that during the winter season, students receive a winter vacation, and all factors have been considered to ensure that students can complete their syllabus on time. “The students who are unable to attend school due to the current conditions will not be penalised for their attendance,” he assured.
Bhiduri added that the government is keeping a close watch on the weather conditions and will make necessary decisions as needed.
The Director School Education Kashmir’s recent directive to adjust school timings to 08 am to 01 pm sparked widespread criticism among parents and educators. The decision, aimed at mitigating the impact of soaring temperatures, has been deemed inadequate and ineffective in addressing the core issue.
Parents are calling for a more substantial solution: an extension of summer vacations. They argue that a longer break would provide a much-needed respite for younger students who are most vulnerable to heat-related health issues.
The decision has left many educators and parents feeling frustrated and unsatisfied. The lack of a comprehensive solution has led to widespread discontent, and it remains to be seen whether the DSEK will reconsider its stance or implement further changes to address the concerns of parents and educators alike.
