Srinagar, Oct 27: In a celebration of strength and heritage, Dal Lake in Kashmir hosted a historic event, the first-ever traditional boat race for women, organized by JKARS.
The race drew over 150 enthusiastic women, breaking barriers and marking a step forward in empowerment and inclusivity in the Valley.
Joining hands with JKARS, celebrated sportswoman Bilquis Mir, who served as India’s first woman jury member at the recent Paris Olympics for water sports, volunteered as the chief organizer.
Bilquis Mir, along with her team from the J&K Watersports and Kayaking/Canoeing Association, managed the event, ensuring it was both memorable and inspiring.
It is worth mentioning that the event was initiated by Suresh B. Kapadia from Nashik, Maharashtra, who has been a strong advocate for the economic and social upliftment of Kashmir and its youth. Known for his efforts in promoting tourism in Gurez, Kapadia’s contributions have been instrumental in transforming the lives of many in the region.
The competition also highlighted the diverse talents of Kashmiri women, as many participants were artisans crafting world-class bags for Caprese, proving that these artisans’ hands are as skilled in the water as they are with embroidery.
Each participant received a certificate and attractive cash prizes, with special awards for the top three finishers.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. Burhan, President of JKARS, and a felicitation of Bilquis Mir by VC LCMA, Younis Malik, for her contributions to the sport and her efforts in bringing honor to the Valley.
The event was graced by notable personalities, including Special Secretary of Tourism Mathura Masoom, Dr. Masrat Parveen, Principal of BHSS Nowpora, Holistic Minds & Soul founder Dr. Souliihaa Rasool, and celebrated broadcaster Tabraiz Nik Madani.
