Srinagar, Dec 02: Mountain Livestock Research Institute (MLRI), SKUAST-K, Manasbal inaugurated two intensive six-week training programs sponsored by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of India, aimed at advancing dairy biotechnology and livestock development in the region.
The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Prof. Riaz A Shah, Professor and Head, MLRI, SKUAST-K, who emphasized the importance of biotechnological interventions in revolutionizing the dairy sector and creating entrepreneurship opportunities for the youth.
The first program, “Commercializing Biotechnology Innovations in the Dairy Industry,” coordinated by Dr. Arif Pandit, Assistant Professor of Animal Biotechnology, focuses on bridging the gap between laboratory innovations and commercial dairy farming. The program aims to equip participants with knowledge of cutting-edge biotechnology applications in dairy farming, from genomic selection to advanced reproductive technologies.
The second program, “Rapid Development of High Genetic Merit Dairy Replacement Stock through Assisted Reproductive Techniques,” is being coordinated by Dr. Syed M. Shah, Assistant Professor of Animal Biotechnology. This training focuses on advanced breeding technologies and genetic improvement strategies to enhance the quality of dairy herds.
The participants, coming from diverse backgrounds including qualified, progressive farmers, budding entrepreneurs, and dairy professionals, showed great enthusiasm for the trainings. The training programs will feature expert lectures from academic and financial institutions. Industry professionals from leading dairy companies and successful dairy entrepreneurs will provide practical insights into commercial applications. The comprehensive curriculum of both programs spans various aspects of dairy biotechnology, from basic concepts to commercial applications.
Scientists from MLRI participated in the inaugural session and shared their expertise with the trainees. The programs will run in parallel for six weeks, featuring both theoretical sessions and hands-on practical training to ensure complete learning.
The training programs align with the government’s vision of promoting entrepreneurship and self-employment in the dairy sector while introducing modern biotechnological interventions for improved productivity and sustainability.
