Kupwara, May 09: Amid rising tensions and heavy shelling along the Indo-Pak border, a deeply emotional video of a displaced family from Soonthipora, Kralpora in Kupwara has gripped social media.
The video shows a widow in her 50s walking barefoot with her two young daughters in the rain, carrying only a bag of clothes and a sack of rice.
Speaking to a local reporter, the woman broke down in tears. “We are only trying to save our lives,” she said. “Overnight shelling destroyed many homes in the village. We had no time to collect anything. I just picked some clothes and my daughter’s books—she studies in 9th class. We have no money for a vehicle, so we are walking.”
As the rain poured down, the mother and her daughters kept moving on foot, hoping to reach a safer place in Nagri Kupwara which is around 30 kilometers from her home. Their story has sparked an emotional outpouring online, with hundreds sharing the video and expressing their pain.
Senior journalist Irfan Lone, who shared the video, said, “This is what war does. A widow with her two daughters is migrating to a safer place, without a single penny in hand, in this harsh rain.” He added that even the reporter on the ground was moved to tears.
The sorrow in her voice and the helplessness in her eyes reflect the pain of many others. Elderly woman Fazi Begum, who also fled the area, said, “We are not alone. So many families from our village have left everything behind.”
The border area Kupwara has been under distress due to repeated unprovoked shelling. Homes lie in ruins, and people are fleeing with nothing but hope. Most have no money, no transportation, and no place to go.
The mother’s words echo the voice of hundreds: “We don’t want anything—just let us live in peace.” This heartbreaking journey reminds the world of the innocent lives caught in the crossfire, and the urgent need for humanity and peace to prevail.
