Kulgam, Dec 26: Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers on Thursday staged a protest in Kulgam against frequent power outages and a steep increase in electricity tariffs.
The protest began at Town Hall, Kulgam, and concluded at the Mini Secretariat, where senior CPI(M) members submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kulgam.
Mohammad Abbas, District Secretary CPI(M) Kulgam, said the freezing temperatures and lack of electricity have made life unbearable. “Frequent outages have become a severe issue. This protest aims to draw the attention of the administration and the government to these problems,” he said.
The protesters said the recommendations of the Rangarajan Committee must be implemented. They said the challenges arising from the Indus Water Treaty between India and Pakistan have disproportionately affected Jammu and Kashmir. “To compensate, the electricity quota from the northern grid should be increased from the current 10-12% to 40%,” Abbas said.
The CMP(M) leader said that a memorandum had been submitted to the DC Kulgam, who assured them that their grievances would be taken up. “Frequent disruptions in electricity supply are severely affecting daily life, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, students and others who depend on electricity for basic needs. Despite facing unreliable power, consumers are being forced to pay exorbitant bills averaging Rs 1,600 per month, adding to their distress,” he said.
Mohammad Afzal Parray, another CPI(M) leader, said the residents face several hardships due to unscheduled power cuts during the harsh winter. He appealed to J&K and central governments to ensure a stable power supply.
“Patients relying on oxygen concentrators at home face significant challenges due to the erratic power supply. Electricity should be provided according to a fixed schedule,” Parray added.
The protesters also demanded that families living below the poverty line (BPL) be provided electricity at highly subsidised and affordable rates.
