Srinagar, Oct 09: The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) on Wednesday issued an official statement reflecting on the recent assembly election results in Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana. It underscored critical insights for secular political forces in the ongoing struggle against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“In Jammu & Kashmir, the National Conference and its allies celebrated a decisive victory, securing a comfortable majority to form the first elected government since the Central government’s “authoritarian rule” began six years ago. CPI(M) acknowledges this outcome as a clear rejection of the BJP’s attempts to undermine the region’s democratic processes through the abrogation of Article 370 and the restructuring of the state into two Union Territories,” the party said in a statement issued here, adding that the electoral mandate signifies the people’s determination to reclaim their democratic rights.
It said the outcome in Haryana presented a more complex picture. “Although the BJP retained a majority in the assembly, it did so with a narrow margin of just 0.6 percent in vote share over the Congress,” the party said.
The CPI(M) highlighted the role of “micro-caste mobilisation” and “insidious communal propaganda” in this election, calling on the Congress to reflect on the factors that influenced this close contest.
The statement concluded with congratulations to Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami for being elected from the Kulgam constituency in Jammu & Kashmir for the fifth time.
