Srinagar, Jun 12: Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded assessment of the damage caused by cross-border shelling, a special session of Parliament and a rehabilitation package for affected people, said the party’s senior leader and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), Kulgam, Mohamad Yousuf Tarigami.
Tarigami, who was part of a Parliamentary delegation of CPI(M) visiting the border villages, said, “The purpose of our visit was to reach the areas that have been damaged and destroyed during shelling. We assessed the damage and understood the problems faced by the victims. This is our assurance to the people—we did not visit for a picnic but to share their pain.”
The delegation, led by CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby, arrived in Kashmir on June 10. They visited Uri and met families affected by shelling, and on June 11, addressed a day-long convention of party workers at Tagore Hall in Srinagar.
Tarigami said the delegation demanded an official assessment of the damage and urged the government to convene a special session of Parliament. “There should be a comprehensive rehabilitation package for the people of Poonch, Karnah, Uri, and other affected areas,” he said.
“We also raised a fundamental question. We believe violence must be controlled, and peace should prevail. But for peace to be established, it is essential to take the people into confidence,” he said.
MLA Kulgam added that if the government truly wants to succeed against violence or those promoting it, it must recognise that the real victims are the people of Kashmir. “They must be taken into confidence,” he said.
