Srinagar, Nov 28: To commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India and to instil values like liberty, equality and fraternity among citizens, the Law Society, School of Law, Kashmir University Tuesday organised an intra-department quiz competition here.
The quiz competition on ‘Constitution Day’ or ‘Samvidhan Divas’ served as a platform to reflect on the principles that underline India’s governance and legal system.
During the valedictory, Vice Chancellor, Kashmir University, Prof Nilofer Khan said that the day holds immense importance for it marks the adoption of the Constitution of India laying the foundation of a sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic republic that assures citizens justice, equality and liberty while promoting fraternity.
“We must empower our youth towards their rights and responsibilities and let’s reaffirm our commitment towards our Constitution which is the nation’s supreme law,” Prof Nilofer Khan said while referring to a special speech delivered by a scholar from KU’s Centre for Women Studies (CWS).
“By instilling constitutional values in the next generation, we can build a society that is more just, tolerant and inclusive,” she added.
Earlier, Aijaz Ahmad Wani, scholar at CWS, KU shared his experiences as a transgender and the journey he endured along the way. He underlined the importance of understanding the Constitution for “it guarantees every individual his rights irrespective of his gender and without any discrimination”.
Dean, Academic Affairs, KU, Prof Farooq Ahmad Masoodi said that we tend to talk more about our rights as guaranteed by the Constitution, however, little do we talk about the duties as enshrined in the Constitution.
“The constitution is to be adopted in letter and spirit and giving people like Aijaz an opportunity to narrate his journey in itself speaks volumes of what the Constitution of India guarantees its citizens of,” he reiterated.
Registrar, Kashmir University, Dr Nisar Ahmad Mir said that this is the right place to make citizens aware of the Constitution and that celebrating the day ensures we understand our rights and duties.
“The university endeavours to support such initiatives and activities at all levels and this is a testament of our commitment to uphold the preamble of our Constitution,” Dr Nisar said.
Underlining the context and essence of celebrating the day, Dean and Head, School of Law, Prof Mohammad Hussain said the day contributes to strengthen the democratic values and the promotion of an informed and engaged citizenry.
The vice chancellor along with the other dignitaries also felicitated the winners of the quiz competition by awarding them trophies, medals and certificates.
