Srinagar, Nov 17: Dr. Parvaiz Ahmad Koul, director of the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), stated that caesarean sections are a curse while speaking during a capacity building workshop on “strengthening midwifery services” at SKIMS.
During the workshop, conducted on Thursday, Director stressed upon that C sections should be encouraged only if necessary.
Dr. Koul emphasised on sensitising people about normal deliveries which he said was a safe and natural physiological process.
“Cesarean sections should be done and encouraged only if indicated, these are otherwise a curse “, Dr. Kaul said. Adding “There is undue load on healthcare facilities while integration of other services like “midwifery services” was a necessity.”
The workshop was also attended by Mission Director, NHM Ayushi Sudan. During the workshop, Director SKIMS said that India was witnessing a change over the years and has marked reduction in maternal and prenatal mortality with technological advances.
The objective of the workshop was to strengthen and to enhance acceptance of midwifery services and cadres. The workshop aimed at enabling smooth integration of midwifery services and cadres into the healthy delivery system. besides. It was also emphasised to improve adherence to respectful and evidence based intrapartum and postpartum family planning practices in hospitals linked to National Midwifery Training Institutes.
On the occasion Dr. Sawasti Das, Sexual and reproductive health and rights specialist UNFPA, New Delhi delivered key speech while Dr. Minakshi Rohilla , Professor Department of Obs/Gynae PGIMER Chandigarh, discussed the objectives of the workshop.
Earlier, the National Family Health Survey 5 (NFHS) on delivery care had revealed alarming trends regarding C-section deliveries in Jammu and Kashmir.
To mention, Jammu and Kashmir has breached the World Health Organisation (WHO) threshold of C-sections ideally between 15 to 20 percent and surpassed it by a huge margin at an alarming rate of 42 percent which is second in India after the southern state of Telangana.
According to the district wise trends in Jammu and Kashmir, Pulwama at 59.7 % tops in C-Section deliveries in public health institutions among J&K districts followed by Srinagar (56.1 %), Anantnag (55.2 %), Bandipora (52.2%), Kupwara (50.7%), Baramulla (49.6%), Ganderbal (46.6%), Kulgam (43.7), Budgam (43%), Jammu (41.8%), Udhampur (41.6%), Kishtwar (36.9%), Samba (35.9%), Poonch (34.6%), Reasi (33.1%), Rajouri (30.7%), Shopian (29.7%), Kathua (28.9%), Doda (23.5%) and Ramban which is 20%.
