Srinagar, Jan 20: Bone and Joints Hospital Srinagar will become first hospital in Jammu and Kashmir to have pneumatic tube system in its under-construction 120-bedded specialized orthopaedic unit building which is expected to be completed in June this year.
Officials said J&K Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA), Jhelum Tawi Flood Recovery Project (JTFRP) in collaboration with the World Bank, has been able to establish construction of 120-bedded Specialized Orthopaedic Unit, an additional hospital block at Bone and Joint Hospital, Barzulla, the only orthopaedic tertiary care centre in the valley.
They said that the prestigious project has been taken up under the component “Critical Infrastructure” of JTFRP funded by the World Bank and received a major fillip in implementation in the last one year which has been recognised in various meetings.
Officials from the executing agency said that the new hospital building is designed as a G+ structure, incorporating modern machinery in its construction.
Medical Superintendent Bone and Joints Hospital, Barzulla, Srinagar, Dr Shabir Siddiqui said this is for the first time in North India and in Jammu and Kashmir that the new hospital building will be having a pneumatic transit system in place.
Pneumatic tube systems, widely adopted in hospitals globally, facilitate the efficient transport of medical items such as blood samples and supplies between floors or departments, minimizing costs and risks associated with manual handling.
He said that the new hospital building will also have a state-of-the-art modular operation theatre (OT) which is also coming for the first time in Jammu and Kashmir.
“We have used fully hygienic and anti-bacterial material in the OT. The building is expected to be completed in June this year,” said the MS.
The Specialized Orthopaedic Unit will have a huge impact on patient care and people will get state-of-the-art facilities.
“The greater the number of facilities, the more patients will benefit. This is the first time that we are using Viscous Fluid Dampers in any structure,” said an official of the executing agency.
He said they have created this facility with an aim that this hospital will be at par with the norms of world-leading hospitals which are in India as well as outside the country.
The official said that the under-construction building will be green certified and they will get a platinum rating for the same. “We have used those materials which are user friendly, environment friendly and require less energy to run. The building will have an automatic waste collection system,” he said.
The Medical Superintendent said that the new building will push the patients further and benefit patients at large.
With the completion of the new block, the hospital will be decongested and is expected to improve trauma and orthopaedics services in the valley. The MS said the hospital gets patients from Kishtwar, Chenab Valley and Ladakh has a greater importance in healthcare.
