Amritsar, Sept 12: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), through its Jammu and Kashmir Branch Office (JKBO), successfully organized a two-day training program for mentors of standards clubs and science teachers from Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts held at Courtyard by Marriott Hotel, Amritsar, on Thursday, the event saw the participation of over 80 attendees.
In the inaugural session, Director BIS-JKBO, Tilak Raj, emphasized the importance of incorporating the “Learning Science via Standards” (LSVS) initiative into school curricula. He highlighted that LSVS helps students relate scientific principles to real-world applications, urging mentors and teachers to use this approach to make learning more interactive and practical.
Kamal Jeet Ghai, Ex Joint Director CIPET and Resource Person has presented an in-depth overview of BIS activities, covering standardization, certification schemes, testing, and training. His session provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of BIS’s role in promoting quality standards across industries.
Key resource persons, Mrs. Monika Sharma and Ms. Mehak Rasool, delivered lectures on the LSVS concept and methodology. They provided detailed insights into BIS activities and the features of the BIS website and e-BIS.
Their sessions covered essential topics such as identifying genuine ISI marks, understanding the hallmarking scheme for gold, and verifying HUID numbers on gold ornaments. They also shared lesson plans to help teachers demonstrate scientific principles through everyday products, making science education more practical.
On the second day, participants visited the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology (CIPET) Laboratory in Amritsar. The Quality Manager gave a detailed demonstration of various testing processes and manufacturing practices, offering participants hands-on insights into testing procedures and quality assurance.
Participants also engaged in group presentations, showcasing how scientific laws can be applied to everyday products, further reinforcing their understanding of standards.
Standard Promotion Officer, Ashish Kumar Dwivedi, discussed the management of standards clubs and stressed the importance of Standard Clubs for updating future generations for promoting the quality revolution in India. He encouraged mentors to take initiatives and organize the programs with their respective schools in near future.
The event concluded with District Education Officer (SE), Amritsar, Harbhagwant Singh, commending BIS for the training initiative and distributing participation certificates. Participants expressed their appreciation for the program, recognizing its value in enhancing their understanding of standards and technical details. The twelve school in the area has been felicitated for their exemplary work for year 2023-24 and they had been awarded with the memento and certification of appreciation by BIS Jammu.
The “Learning Science via Standards” initiative, developed by BIS, aims to enhance scientific literacy by connecting classroom learning to real-world applications. It enriches students’ understanding of quality and standards, empowering them with practical knowledge for their future endeavours.
