Pulwama, Aug 27 : National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah Tuesday called participation of Jamaat-e-Islami backed independent candidates “ better late than never.”
Omar, talking to media in Pahalgam, while accompanying their nominated candidate to file nomination papers, said that earlier election participation was a taboo ( haram) for JeI but now it is permissible ( halaal).
He said now JeI advocates mass participation in elections which is a good sign.
“It is better late than never,” he said, adding that we were saying from day one that democratic way is the only viable method to achieve things.
“It is a good thing that there is a change in the 35 year long political ideology of Jamaat-e-Islamia,” he said, adding that they were wishing that the ban on JeI would be lifted allowing them to contest with their party symbol.
“Unfortunately the decision didn’t happen in New Delhi,” he said, adding that JeI is in the election fray with their independent candidates.
“Let’s see how things unfold,” he said.
Omar Abdullah also expressed hope that the NC-Congress alliance coalition will form a majority government in Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier in Bijbehara Omar Abdullah said that NC has put their manifesto, road map and programme before the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
“We struck a seat sharing agreement with congress,” he said, adding that they exhorted efforts to put a consolidated fight against BJP and their allies in the elections to increase probability of their success furthermore.
Omar said that he is well aware that many party leaders, who have been working for the past 10 years, were willing to contest but couldn’t due to the seat sharing agreement. He regretted going against their expectations.
He promised that the leaders will be accommodated in future so that they can serve the party and people in their respective areas.
