Ganderbal, Jan 1: The Annual Urs of revered Sufi saint Sheikh Jamal-u- Din (RA) was celebrated Wednesday at Sehipora-Wayil in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, drawing a large number of devotees from across the valley and neighboring areas.
The event was marked by religious fervour and communal harmony. Devotees from various faiths and communities came together to participate in the grand congregation, which has become a cornerstone of Kashmir’s spiritual heritage. The Urs, which begins annually on 29th of Islamic month Rabi-us-Sani, features Quran Khawani, Darood Azqar and Khatmat-ul-Mozama, followed by day-long prayers.
During the Urs, devotees offered heartfelt prayers for lasting peace in Kashmir and sought divine blessings and mercy. Dua-e-Majlis and Fateh Khawani were conducted, with attendees invoking the saint’s intercession for prosperity and success. A local resident remarked, “May Almighty grant us success and fortune through this revered saint. Sufism is the essence of Kashmir’s society, deeply embedded in our values and belief systems.”
A large number of women and children also participated in the Urs and prayed for the everlasting peace in Kashmir. “We prayed for peace, good health and bumper crop,” said Shameema, a devotee. She said the shrine is a place where prayers are listened to and diseases are healed. “We have been coming here every year on the occasion of Urs and will continue till we are alive.”
Many elderly men were serving Kehwa to devotees. “This is a revered shrine. Here, Almighty listens to our prayers. We are spiritually attached to this shrine,” said Ali Muhammad, a resident of Gund, Ganderbal.
